Ultrasounds and Bone Density (DEXA) screenings are conducted on site by our qualified CRT and RDMS technician. Fine Needle Biopsies are also performed on site by our qualified physicians.

Since we have an affiliation with UCSF, all our physicians are faculty who treat patients, conduct research and teach the next generation of specialists. Approximately 40% of all physicians remain and practice medicine in the area once they have completed their residency training. This is a significant resource in our community as we are bringing the expertise of UCSF to Fresno, and creating more qualified physicians for the Central Valley.

Medical Nutrition Therapy and Medical Weight Management

We offer medical weight management, nutritional counseling, and educational classes as a part of our comprehensive program to treat diabetes and obesity related diseases. Our RDN (Registered Dietitian Nutritionist) and CDE (Certified Diabetes Educator) works closely with patients to manage their weight and blood glucose levels through proper nutrition and change in life style. Our RDN has over 20 years of experience in nutrition counseling.

Osteoporosis and Thyroid Care through advanced Ultrasound, Fine Needle Biopsies and Bone Density Screenings

Osteoporosis Care

Diabetes and Endocrine Specialties, Inc. provides quality osteoporosis care. Osteoporosis is the disease in which bones become thin and weak. It can progress painlessly until a bone breaks. Broken bones or fractures commonly occur in the hips, spine, ribs and wrists.

People most at risk for osteoporosis are white and Asian women past menopause. Other risk factors include aging, low body weight, smoking and some medications.

To identify if you are at risk, we can conduct a bone mineral density test with our advanced dual energy X-ray absorpbtiometry (DEXA) machine

We can also help with changes in your diet and lifestyle to help improve your bone mass and prevent future fractures.

Bone density scanning is an enhanced form of X-ray technology that is used to measure bone loss. It can also track the effects of treatment for osteoporosis and assess an individual’s risk for developing fractures. The risk of fracture is affected by age, body weight, history of prior fracture, family history of osteoporotic fractures and life style issues such as cigarette smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.

Thyroid Treatment

The thyroid gland is one of your endocrine glands which produces hormones. Thyroid hormones control the rate of many activities in your body such as controlling the function of the body’s metabolism and many organs such as the heart, brain, liver, kidneys and skin.

We can help with the testing and treatment of all thyroid disorders such as Hypothyroidism, Hyperthyroidism, Goiter, thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer.

Ultrasound scanning (pictured at left) is used to examine the neck and the thyroid gland for possible thyroid disease, lumps and masses. It is also used to guide fine-needle biopsies of the thyroid performed in our office. Ultrasound scans are administered by Krysia Lewis, RT (R), RDMS, who is a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer specializing in the use of Ultrasound scans on the neck of patients in a professional and caring manner.

Common thyroid problems can be broken down into four general groups:

  • Irregular production of hormone (too much or too little)
  • Inflammation or increased growth of the thyroid
  • Formation of nodules or lumps within the thyroid
  • Thyroid cancer
