Ernestina H. Saxton, M.D., Ph.D., specializes in the comprehensive treatment of headaches and migraines. She is board certified in psychiatry and neurology.
A graduate of the UCLA School of Medicine, Dr. Saxton also completed her neurology residency and fellowship training at UCLA.
Dr. Saxton obtained her Ph.D. degree in Medical Microbiology and Immunology from UCLA School of Medicine. Her dissertation resulted in two publications in the international journal, Brain Research.
Dr. Saxton’s academic research interests include the study of migraines, particularly in conjunction with thoracic outlet syndrome. She has authored medical publications and a book chapter on these subjects and has presented her studies at scientific meetings both nationally and internationally. Dr. Saxton is currently completing a book on headache and migraine for long suffering patients and for the primary physicians who care for them. The purpose in writing this book is to increase patients’ self-awareness of their disease, enhance doctor-patient communication and promote effective self-care through consultation.
Dr. Saxton has a passion for teaching and has worked with: pre-medical students, medical students, residents and fellows. In addition to teaching, Dr. Saxton also maintains a passion for giving back to the community through mentoring and tutoring in clinical medicine. One of her great joys was participating as a mentor to students from the Martin Luther King, Jr. – Charles Drew Medical Magnet High School.
Inspired at an early age with an acute awareness of health disparities, Dr. Saxton has extraordinary passion for patient/consumer education that has only grown throughout her decades in medicine. In 2008, Dr. Saxton was identified as one of Southern California’s Super Doctors and in 2011, the Los Angeles NAACP Youth Council chose her as one of 12 outstanding role models to receive the Meritorious Women Award.
Dr. Saxton was born and raised in the Panama Canal Zone and she is fluent in English and Spanish. She has addressed academic and community audiences in both languages and has served as a regional outreach speaker to Hispanic patients with epilepsy.
